Sweeney Todd, the demon barber of fleet street

Muncie Civic Theater, Muncie IN

2005 Civie Award Winner: Best Musical

A new interpretation of Sondheim’s macabre masterpiece, designed as if it were performed at the end of the 1800’s (complete with footlights), but infused with contemporary psychological issues. Todd, the lead character, is in severe denial with an occasional tendency of self-mutilation; he’s a cutter. Mrs. Lovett is a manipulative passive-aggressive caretaker with control issues. Johanna, a clinical narcissist. Each character has a secret psychological issue that motivated them through a tragic story of revenge and loss. In the end, every character is affected by tragedy and falls to human frailty.
